Ilya Kovalchuk named alternate captain
Zach Parise is one of the Devils’ two alternate captains (Patrik Elias is the other), so, while he is out for the next three months recovering from surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, coach John MacLean has to give the second “A” to another player. MacLean said he did not give the “A” to Kovalchuk to try to motivate him.
“I feel he deserves it,” MacLean said. “He cares about his team and he gives an honest effort when he’s out there.”
